Global Economy Assignment: A 2000-word written report addressing the task detailed below. Task Assess the contribution of the World Bank Report- the East Asian Miracle (1993), to our understanding of the success of High Performing Asian Economies

The introduction and chapter 1 (pages 1 to 26 and 79 and 103) are available on Moodle as part of the documents associated with Article A (The Asian Miracle):

Overview-The Making of the Miracle

Chapter 1-Public Policy and Growth

For the World Report (1993), you should initially consult pages 1 to 26 but also the functional model presented in chapter 1 (see figure 2.1 on p. 88). There is no need to read all the chapters of this lengthy report! In addressing the assignment question, you should also undertake additional research and cite this in your report. As a starting point, additional reading has been included on Moodle.

Please refer to the capsule-Article A: An Examination of the World Bank Explanation of the Asian Miracle for further reading and activities which are designed to prepare you for this assignment.

High Performing Asian Economies

The report defines these as:

Japan, the 4 Tigers (Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea), Newly industrialising economies (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand).

China is mentioned in the report BUT this is not included in their report or this assignment.

A key issue is relative role of state intervention versus getting the fundamentals right. There are also other issues at play as for example, detailed in the report. To address this assignment, you will need to as noted, read beyond the World Bank (1993) report.
