Land Use Planning

Major shocks and disruptions often lead to intensive land use planning processes and big changes in the direction of land use planning. Floods and fires, as you’ve read in the case studies from Colorado and Iowa, can lead communities to work with funding sources to adapt physically and through policy; in other cases, communities focus on restoring the previous status quo. The pandemic, along with protests and social unrest in many US cities, were a different kind of shock and disruption. In what way were the impacts of the pandemic and protests similar to a natural disaster? How were the impacts different? What re-orientation in land use planning do you think we will see in the next three to five years as a result?
