Students are required to write a 57-page (typed, double-spaced) paper that analyzes a
film viewed outside of class. and write an analysis of that film, using detailed examples
from the film to support your ideas.
Your paper SHOULD NOT include a plot synopsis but should explore the theme of the
film and the techniques used by the filmmaker to develop and communicate her/his ideas.
Your analysis should recognize the codes and conventions of film used within your
selection. Your analysis should include a discussion of the components of filmmaking
that we have explored in class and through the textbook: i.e. mise-en-scene,
cinematography, editing, and sound, as well as relevant concepts such as genre or the
context in which the film was made.
Students should expect to view and take notes on their chosen film several times
in the course of writing the paper. Please do not wait until the end of the semester:
