The American Dream vs. An Immigrant’s Reality

Option 2: In 1931, historian and author James Truslow Adams coined the term American Dream, an idea that has become integral to our national identity. According to Adams, [the American Dream] is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of a social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest statute of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position. Jumpa Lahiris The Namesake considers the degree to which Adams notion of the American Dream is possible. Is the American Dream possible for all people as it is for Gogol and his family? And if not, why? Discuss.

I am arguing why achieving The American Dream is NOT achievable – at least by the definition that is provided, for the majority of immigrants who migrated to the United States in order to seek a better lifestyle.
